Finnish Nordic Ski Pole manufacturer Excel is making quite literal waves in the ski industry with its funky looking X-Curve HMC100. The pole vaguely resembles the poles used by downhill racers to achieve a tighter tuck, but of course longer, and with the curve up towards the grip. The curve in this new nordic pole is not present for the same reason as in downhill poles. The purpose of the bend is to improve energy transfer and acceleration when skiing. Excel claims an improvement of 20% in “propulsion power”. Although a foreign concept in the nordic ski world, the likes of elite Norwegian biathlete Ole Einar Björndalen are using this pole exclusively on the world cup circuit. Although the HMC100 is the top of the line high modulus carbon model, it is worth mentioning that Excel does offer several more accessible levels. Are you interested in these new spring like poles?
